How social media impacts SEO for therapists (and what actually matters)

9/18/2025

Discover how social media indirectly supports SEO for therapists. Learn how platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn can drive traffic, build trust, and boost visibility for your practice.
When therapists think about SEO, social media doesn’t usually come to mind first. After all, SEO is about Google rankings, while Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn are all separate platforms. But here’s the thing: social media and SEO are connected more than you might realize.

Social channels won’t directly move your website up in search rankings, Google has said likes and shares aren’t ranking factors. But indirectly, social media can make a huge difference in how people find (and trust) your practice online. The key is knowing what actually matters, so you don’t waste energy on trends that don’t serve your goals.

1. Social media builds your online footprint
Every time you post on social media, you’re creating another way for people to discover you. A parent searching “child therapy resources” might not stumble onto your website right away, but they could land on your Instagram post or LinkedIn article. Once they’re on your profile, your bio link points them straight to your site.

Search engines also notice this. Even though they don’t count likes, they do crawl profiles, captions, and links. Having an active social presence strengthens your overall visibility and reinforces your credibility.

2. Social media drives traffic, and traffic matters for SEO
When people click from your Instagram bio, Facebook page, or even YouTube videos and head to your website, that’s traffic. And traffic signals to Google that your site is relevant. The more people arrive, stay, and engage, the stronger your website looks in search.

The trick is making that journey smooth. Don’t just drop your homepage link everywhere; think about what your audience actually needs. A blog post that answers a common question (“How does family therapy work?”) or a simple “Book a consultation” landing page often works better than a generic homepage link.

3. Content gets shared, and that leads to backlinks
Backlinks (other sites linking to yours) are one of the biggest ranking factors in SEO. And where do people often discover content worth sharing? Social media.

For therapists, this might look like a colleague sharing your blog on LinkedIn, a parenting account reposting your Instagram carousel, or a local news outlet picking up something insightful you’ve shared. Each of those shares creates opportunities for backlinks, and backlinks help boost SEO.

4. Social signals reinforce your brand trust
Here’s a subtle but important piece: potential clients often cross-check. Someone may find you through Google, but before booking they’ll peek at your Instagram to get a sense of your voice, your values, and your approach. That trust factor is essential. When your social presence aligns with your website, it reassures clients they’re in the right place.

Bottom line: Social media won’t replace SEO, but it does amplify it. For therapists, the best strategy is to see social as a bridge: it drives traffic, builds brand trust, and increases the chances of backlinks. Focus on quality over quantity: share useful content, link back to your site intentionally, and show up consistently.

SEO may get people to your door, but social media helps them feel comfortable stepping inside.
